Amelia Gorman Park: Terraced Park In Washington Heights

Amelia Gorman Park or Gorman Park is found from West 189 Street to West 190 Street in Upper Manhattan. It is a unique park in Washington Heights, Uptown, that is set out on a steep hill with a terrace leading up from Broadway to the top of the park at Wadsworth Terrace.

Gorman Park is a 1.89-acre (0.76 ha) park.

From Broadway to Wadsworth Terrace, the land rises in an abrupt incline of more than 100 feet. There is a path in the park that ascends through the trees.

You can take a walk up the terrace areas with its broad stone staircase that starts at Broadway and leads up to the the Wadsworth Terrace entrance to Gorman Park.

From this vantage point at the Wadsworth Terrace entrance, you will be able to get a panoramic view of Washington Heights.

Numerous seating areas are available for visitors to the park.

There is a ramp for people in wheelchairs to get in and out of the park. There is also a water fountain in the park for a drink.

Unfortunately, there is no playground at the Amelia Gorman Park, which also explains why is it a rather quiet place.

It is a favorite place to find solitude and privacy while in uptown vicinity. Depending on when you visit and the season of the year, Amelia Gorman Park can look completely different.

What people appreciate about it most is the lovely views of the neighbourhood and the parks on the opposite side of the island that it offers.

The Gorman Park honors Gertie Amelia Gorman (1859-1920), a real estate investor. It has stone wall with an inscription made from Deer Isle granite dedicating the park to the memory of Gertie A. Gorman.
