Bloomingdale Playground can be found at the junction of Amsterdam Ave., West 104 Street and West 105 Street on Manhattan, New York City. All the way up to 1997, this park was known as P.S. 145 Playground. In that year, it was renamed Bloomingdale Playground.
What’s at Bloomingdale Playground
Kids will love Bloomingdale Playground because of it the playground and its play equipment. The playground was reconstructed and reopened in 2019.
The playground features children’s play areas with swings as well as safety surfacing. The bright red playground has ramps as well as various platforms and tubes that kids can explore and have fun on.
Slides also lead down from the play structure, providing a fun way for kids to have fun with friends and family.
Another fun section of the playground features an arc designs as well as circular panels – all part of the playground structure.
There is also a water spray area with sprinklers for kids to cool down in the summer.
Just a small tip: bring along insect repellent during the summer as there can be mosquitoes.
Another feature at the playground is a synthetic turf field that can be used for general play. It also doubles up as a gathering and performance space.
For those who are more sporty, there are basketball courts at the park too. In addition, adult fitness equipment can be found at the Bloomingdale Playground, providing the opportunity for adults to exercise while the kids play at the playground.
Benches provide spots for park-goers to also simply enjoy the park.
There are also public restrooms at the Bloomingdale Playground.
History of the Bloomingdale Playground
The playground now known as Bloomingdale Playground first opened on September 12, 1962. It was there to complement the neighboring school and came under the joint operation of NYC Parks and the Board of Education in November 1963.
However, in 1997, it was decided to rename the playground to its present name as a reflection of the area’s history.
The area was named Bloomingdale by the Dutch and Flemish after a town near Haarlem in the Netherlands. It comes from the Dutch word “bloomendaal”, which means vale of flowers.
