However, just off the main hullabaloo of Times Square is a hidden gem – Margon Cuban Restaurant NYC, a small diner that serves up tasty and authentic meals along with a friendly service and a good dose of hospitality.

Walking in to the narrow dining area at Margon NY, we were warmly greeted. This was something that we noticed with everyone who came through the doors of the restaurant.

Whether it was a customer, a delivery man or a policeman, each were given the same authentic and friendly. Margon had a welcoming atmosphere, one where everyone seemed to know each other by name.

We made our way along the narrow walkway. A limited number of tables were squeezed against the side wall.

On the other side was the counter to place the orders.

Cuban Sandwiches & Other Platters

Cuban Sandwiches

One of the reasons why we were at Margon was to get one of their Cuban sandwiches.

This hearty sandwich is a variation of the ham and cheese sandwich and contains plenty of protein to fill up a hungry tummy.

After placing the order, the Cuban sandwich ($10) is made to order. It comes with a hearty serve of ham and pork packed with pickles and sauce between a loaf of Cuban bread toasted in a panini press. The bread provides a satisfying crunch that complemented the layers of meat.

Other available sandwiches include the Steak Sandwich ($10.50) which includes alomilla thin sliced steak with Margon’s special majito dressing on Cuban bread, and the Roast Pork Sandwich ($10.50)

Plantains and salami at Margon Cuban Restaurant

Another breakfast platter that we had was the Mangu con Salami, Queso y Huevo. It featured mashed plantains along with salami, eggs and pickled onions.

Filling the plate to the brim, it was a delicious meal that hit all the right spots with the savoury notes of the salami contrasting with the tartness of the pickled onions.

There are plenty of other platters to satisfy customers. These include Roast Chicken with a choice of two sides and a 12 oz. Soda ($12.00), Polomilla Steak with two side orders ($13) and Beef Stew or Carne guisada with two side orders ($13.00).

The prices are extremely reasonable for the portion size and the fact that the restaurant is just off Times Square.

Also keep a look out for daily specials. These are good reason to return to Margon to try the different dishes.

oxtail stew

The Oxtail Stew ($13), a Friday special, was tender and delicious. It was came covered with savoury gravy and was served with a well seasoned rice that completed the meal.

Cuban coffee

You can also get a Cuban coffee, a thick espresso drink that comes with a layer of sugary foam for a dark, rich, robust and sweet flavour.

Sodas

There are also a variety of sodas available.
