History of Echo Park Lake, LA
Echo Park Lake has a long history that goes back all the way to the 1860s. It was originally used by the city as a reservoir for drinking water and in 1891, a park was added to it with landscaping works going on from 1892.
The name Echo Park is attributed to City Parks Superintendent Joseph Henry Tomlinson. The story goes that the name came about from the sound of echoes he heard while Echo Park Lake was being constructed.
The park was finally completed in 1895.
Over the years, the park went through different phases because it was rehabilitated in 2013.
What to Do at Echo Park Lake
Today, Echo Park Lake is best known as recreational area where people and families can enjoy outdoor activities.
Swan Boats
One of the most popular activities at Echo Park Lake is rent a swan pedal boat from the Echo Park Boathouse. It is a fun and unique way to view Echo Lake’s lotus beds and fountains.
The iconic swan pedal boats at Echo Park Lake come in two sizes.
The large swan pedal boat can seat up to five passengers.
The small swan pedal boat at Echo Park Lake can seat two adults and two children who are 10 years old and younger.
For added fun, there is a free Find and seek games that visitors can play while on board the swan pedal boat. Scan a QR code at the neck of the boat to get the instructions on how to play.
For a fun, night time activity, the swan boats can also be rented out for a twilight experience. Decorated with LED lights, it is a magical experience on the water.

Lotus Festival
In July, it is not just swans boats that are out on the lake. There are dragonboats too and visitors can watch them racing up and down the water as part of the Lotus Festival.
SLC Boat House Bistro

On the eastern side of the lake, is the SLC Boathouse Bistro. Choose from a menu with breakfast, bennys, and no fuss sandwich favorites like tuna melts and grilled chicken sandwiches. This place is an unassuming gem to grab a bike.
Walk Around the Lake
Another good way to experience Echo Park Lake is on foot. Take a walk along the mile loop that goes around the lake. Enjoy the views of the fountain at the center of the lake and the “Lady of the Lake” sculpture at the north end.
Visitors may also be able to spot ducks and turtles around the lake.
