Cashless Payment is More Prevalent
While Japan is very much known as a cash-based society, since the pandemic, cashless payments have become more common. There are digital providers such as PayPay and Line Pay, as well as ApplePay and credit card contactless payments. These contactless payments can even be used on subways. This can even eliminate the need for transportation cards like Suica. Instead, you can add Suica on the phone via Apple Wallet.
Nonetheless, it may still be useful to have cash available as a backup in the case that contactless payment options are not available.
Gradual Reopenings
Even though Japan will be opening up to tourists, you should still expect the pace to take a while for it to return to the pre-pandemic pace. There may be fewer flights and transport options, or operating hours may still not be as long as before. Not all tourism businesses may be fully operational so check online for the latest.
New Shinkansen Rules
As of 2020, the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen lines have new rules that do not allow large suitcases on the trains. Luggage that is 160 cm or smaller can be loaded on to the train as per normal. This will be able to fit on the overhead storage area.
Suitcase that 160 to 250 cm can be brought on board but require a reservation. The reservation can be made fro free. Suitcases that are over 251 cm are not allowed on the Shinkansen. You can get more details here.
If you are traveling with large luggage, an alternative is to send it ahead to your destination with transport companies like Yamato Transport.
Pay for Bags
Since 2020, places such as convenience stores are no longer providing free bags with purchases. Expect to pay between 2 to 20 cents for a bag. You can also bring along your own bag to save on the costs.
No Smoking in Restaurants
Smoking has been banned in restaurants since April 1, 2020. This ban was introduced in anticipation of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Some restaurants who are worried are losing smoking customers have specially designated, separate smoking areas.
Masks are Still Common in Japan
While there is no official mandate on mask-wearing, people still generally wear masks while in Japan. You may also still find temperature checks and hand sanitisers all over the place.
