Bleecker Playground can be found in the West Village, at the junction of Hudson Street, Bleecker Street and 8 Avenue, on Manhattan, New York City, just around the corner from Bleecker Street Pizza.
It first opened in 1966 and has been a hub for the families living in the neighbourhood.
What’s at Bleecker Playground
Bleecker Playground is fitted with playground equipment and areas for children.
There are different areas for kids of various ages and types of swings for toddlers as well as slightly older kids.
In addition, for those who need a break and want to spend some time outdoors, there are chairs, benches and tables just south of the playground where people are welcomed to sit, read and relax.
There were sandbox areas, a great climb-and-slide playset with slides and a wobbly bridge, and a sprinkler at the Bleecker Playground which has rubber padding. For older toddlers, there is a larger sand and play area.
There is also a sculpture called Family at the park.
You will also occasionally find events and activities for kids organised at Bleecker Playground during the holidays such as Halloween. These are organized by the Friends of Bleecker Playground local community group.
This park is also a great area to enjoy your cakes from the famous Magnolia Bakery, which is just across the stret. There are tables and chairs where you can sit and enjoy your baked goods like the cheesecake from the bakery.
There are also public restrooms at Bleecker Playground.
It may be a small park but because of its locations, the park can get quite busy. You will find kids playing at the playground and people sitting down enjoying the outdoors.
How Bleecker Playground Came About
The City of New York bought the Stetler Warehouse south of historic Abingdon Square in 1959 to make way for the first playground in the neighbourhood in response to community demands for a secure play area.
In 1997, park facilities underwent a significant renovation that included new lighting, benches, shrubbery, handicap accessibility, new play equipment, and the reinstallation of play equipment.
Bleecker Playground is located opposite from Abingdon Square and close to Magnolia Bakery.
