Upon entering the deli, you will receive a ticket from the staff by the entrance. Every customer receives a ticket This ticket serves as a record of your order and will be used to calculate the total cost, excluding tax and tips.

When you order a menu item, it is recorded on the ticket.

Pay on the way out

You will then need to present the ticket at the cashier on the way out after their meal. The cashier will then tally up the bill and let you know how much to pay.

To get started ordering food, simply line up at one of the ordering stations, where friendly staff members will take your food order.

There are multiple lines where you can order your sandwiches – these are labeled Cutter 1, Cutter 2, and so forth. So there is not need to only join the line for the cutter closest to the entrance. You can move in and you may find shorter lines as you move into the deli.

Grill and bar line

The line for the grill menu and drinks like egg creams is closest to the entrance. Amongst the grill items available include burgers, hot dogs and grilled cheese.

If you want to order omelets, latkes and salads, order at the last counter.

Cutter at Katz

When you get to the front of the line, you can let the cutter know what you want. They will then cut the meat and prepare the sandwich for you.

Some people say that you should know what you want before you get to the line. If not, you may end up getting shouted at since New Yorkers are rather busy and don’t like to be held up.

However, our experience with our Cutter was that he was nice and friendly.

Nonetheless, it is probably still a good idea to know what you would like to order so that you don’t hold up the line. Use the time you have while queuing up to look at the menu board and decide what type of sandwich you’d like to order.

Taster

Typically, they will cut a few slices of meat for you to taste and to whet your appetite.

It is customary to leave a tip at Katz’s Deli, particularly when interacting with the cutters who expertly slice the meat to order. These hardworking individuals appreciate your recognition and gratitude for their skill and service.

The cutter will also ask you if you would like to have some pickles with your sandwich. If you would like the pickles, you will get a few cuts of sour and half-sour pickles. These help to give your palette a break from rich flavors of the sandwich if needed.
