History of Luton Hoo
Luton Hoo can trace its roots back to 1601 when Robert Napier acquired the estate. The current mansion house was the residence of the 3rd Earl of Bute, who served as King George III’s Prime Minister. It dates back to the late 18th century. Capability Brown, a well-known landscape architect, was hired to redesign the parkland and gardens, which now cover 1,065 acres.
It was then acquired by Sir Julius Wernher in 1903. During World War II, Luton Hoo was occupied by the Eastern Command and the grounds were used to test tanks before they were shipped off to the war.
Post-World War II, Winston Churchill visited and addressed a crowd of 110,000 to thank them for their support during the war.
The estate was put up for sale in 1997 and purchased in 1999 by Elite Hotels, reopening as a hotel in 2007. It was then acquired by Arora Group in December 2021.
Luton Hoo has been used as a filming location for shows like 1994’s Four Weddings and a Funeral.
