San Jose has picked up a variety of different names. Its nicknames include Teal Town or Fin City. This is a reference to the San Jose Sharks, a team that the city is proud of.
Another nickname for San Jose is Man Jose. This is a consequence of men outnumbering women in the early 2000s during the tech boom. However, this is something that San Jose is leaving behind as the gender ratio has equalized.
It was also called Tan Jose because of a lack of color amongst San Jose’s buildings. However, this is also also something that is improving.
What Makes San Jose Unique and What is it Known For?
San Jose is found in the Santa Clara Valley, around 50 miles southeast of San Francisco, in northern California on the West Coast of the United States of America. It is known for its tech community with many major companies headquartering in the city.
It is often clustered together with San Francisco and Oakland as part of a triangle of cities in the Bay Area.

California’s First City
San Jose was California’s first city and its first civilian settlement too. El Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe was founded on November 29, 1999 and it this was incorporated into the City of San Jose on March 27, 1850.
It was also the California state capital from 1849 to 1852.
Northern California’s Largest City
Surprise, surprise. The largest city by population in northern California is not San Francisco. Instead, the honor goes to San Jose. It is also the third largest city in California, being out ranked by Los Angeles and San Diego.
Capital of Silicon Valley
The southern region of the San Francisco Bay Area is referred to as Silicon Valley. This name came about due to the area’s connection to the silicon transistor, which is used in all contemporary microprocessors. The name Silicon Valley was first used in the early 1970s, appearing on January 10, 1971 in a publication known as Electronic News.
Silicon Valley is home to a myriad of major technology, software, and internet companies.
Some of the major technology companies that have become household names originated in Silicon Valley. These include Adobe, Apple, Google, Meta, (formerly known as Facebook) and Visa.
As the largest city in Silicon Valley, San Jose is also known as Silicon Valley’s capital.
High Number of Patents
With all the innovation going on in Silicon Valley, it should not come as a surprise that San Jose has one of the highest number of patents per capita. The city’s US Patent and Trademark Office is located in the San Jose City Hall.
Egyptian Museum
Mummies in northern California? Yes, you’d be surprised to find that there is a museum that specializes in Egyptology in San Jose. The Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum is dedicated to ancient Egypt and can be found at the Rosicrucian Park in the Rose Garden neighborhood of San Jose, California.
Winchester Mystery House
One of the places that make San Jose unique and special is the Winchester Mystery House. There is not where else that something like this exists and is a must-visit for any one who is in San Jose.
San Jose’s Winchester Mystery House was once the home of Sarah Winchester, the tragic widow of William Winchester and the heiress of the fortune from the Winchester Repeating Arms company.
Between 1886 to 1922, non-stop construction work took place at the house and what was once an eight room farm house was expanded to an unrecognizable property with 10,000 windows, 160 rooms, 47 stairwells and other unusual architectural features. It is even reputed to be haunted.
The Winchester Mystery House is open to the public and can be visited on tours.
Peralta Adobe
Built by José Manuel Gonzeles, one of the founders of San Jose, and named after its most famous resident, Luis María Peralta, the Peralta Adobe is the oldest building in San Jose. It changed hands and was even used as a storage facility before being purchased by the City of San Jose in 1966.
Peralta Adobe is San Jose’s top historic landmark and the last remaining vestige of El Pueblo De San Jose de Guadalupe. It is registered as California historic landmark number 866.
Kelley Park
A great place to get outdoors and enjoy a walk, or for families to play games, Kelley Park is located at the north side of San Jose. It has 172 acres of greenery and is situated on Senter Road. Pack a picnic basket and settle down for a nice outdoor experience.
Happy Hollow Park and Zoo
Located at the northern end of San Jose’s Kelley Park is Happy Hollow. The greenery of the park also features towering redwood trees along with oaks and pine trees. Happy Hollow is home to a zoo. It is also where visitors can find one of the longest running puppet theatres shows in California. Visitors can occasionally get to see other stage shows like animal and magic acts.
Viet Museum
This quaint museum housed in Greenwalk house is dedicated to the experience of Vietnamese Americans. It is also known as the Museum of the Boat People and documents their journey from Vietnam to freedom in the United States of America.
The museum took over 30 years to come to fruition, with planning having started in 1976 and finally opening its doors only in 2007.
Little Saigon
One distinct and unique district to visit while in San Jose is Little Saigon. This is located in East San Jose and is the centre of the Vietnamese-American community in San Jose. It was created in 2007 and recognized by the City of San Jose and is also the center of celebrations for the Vietnamese New Year or Tet each year.
Willow Glen
Willow Glen is a quaint neighborhood in San Jose with boutique shops and restaurants that can be a fun day of exploration.
The Tech Interactive
Being in Silicon Valley, it should not be surprising to know that there is a science and innovation museum in San Jose. Formerly known as the The Tech Museum of Innovation, the Tech Interactive features hands on activities over two floors.
One particularly unique set of exhibits at The Tech Interactive is Body Worlds Decoded, which features plastinated human bodies.
San Jose’s Landmarks
There are more landmarks and buildings that make San Jose special and unique. These include the Cathedral Basilica of St Joseph, outdoor trails like the Los Gatos Creek Trail, and San Pedro Square Market, a place with restaurants and vendors offering cuisines from around the world.
